2025

2024

Around this time last year, I decided to prioritize gaming again. That decision started paying off immediately.

I played a shit-ton of games in 2024. More than I have in the past 10 years combined.

I played roughly around 30 sessions last year1 . Most of which were open OD&D games in different Discord servers.

I’ve been gaming around 25 years now. And I can say that I learned more about gaming this year than any other year. I am a way better player2 and referee than I was this time last year. The reason is because of actual play.

2025

I’m building on the momentum to make this year even better.

long games

I’m focusing on long-term play this year. In other words, in the long campaign:

We need long campaigns. We need to sit down with the same group of people on a regular basis over the course of years, telling the kind of stories which require concentration and thought and, above all, loyalty; stories which gain their own momentum through peaks and troughs, ebbs and flows, ups and downs and ins and outs; stories in which the events which happen matter because they have a context and a background and an unknown future waiting to be discovered. We don't need the inconsequential frippery of the one-shot; we need time.

make stuff

I’ve written a bunch of new stuff for OD&D: new monsters, rules, systems, frameworks, explanations of esoteric rules. I haven’t shared any of them for… reasons; I guess. I’m changing that this year.

change log

  1. I played and ran other games. Unknown Armies, The Black Sword Hack, Sorcerer, just to name a handful.

  2. I'm referring to the skills necessary to reach od&d’s endgame. This is must certainly a topic of another post.
